Day 1

Overnight flight to Johannesburg.

Days 2-3

Onward flight to Durban and collect hire car. Drive north and stay for two nights at the Karkloof Wellness & Wildlife Retreat. Set on a large wildlife reserve, guest accommodation is in highly luxurious individual villas. Game drives, nature walks, mountain biking and trips to view the stunning nearby waterfalls are all available, but the piece de resistance is the stunning spa complex, one of Africa’s finest. (FB)

Days 4-5

Drive onward to stay for two nights at the Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, tucked away in the Drakensberg Mountains near Giants Castle. There are just six luxurious rooms, and the renowned owner-chef Richard Poynton runs a superb dining room, where the freshest ingredients are grown on-site to create fine country cooking. (HB)

Days 6-7

Continue to stay for two nights at Isandlwana Lodge. Located on the site of one of the most dramatic events in Zulu history, this luxury lodge offers views across the great Isandlwana plain. Escorted tours of the nearby Rorkes Drift & Blood River battlefields are offered, as are visits to local Zulu settlements. (FB)

Days 8-10

Continue to stay for three nights at Makakatana Bay Lodge. This is the only privately-owned lodge set within the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and accommodates just 12 guests in en-suite rooms. Activities include game drives, boat & beach safaris, fishing safaris, bird watching and wetland nature walks, and visits to a Zulu cultural village. (FB)

Days 11-14

Drive south to the Fairmont Zimbali Lodge for the final four nights. This five-star development overlooks the forested gardens and makes use of the indigenous local materials. Unrivalled service is complemented by first class food, and facilities include the beach, tennis courts, health spa, spectacular swimming pool and championship golf course. (BB)

Day 15

Return hire car at Durban airport and fly to Johannesburg for overnight flight to the UK.
