Elephant Pepper Camp - Northern Masai Mara
A traditional camp in the northern Masai Mara, Elephant Pepper provides a truly authentic bush safari experience. Outstanding eco credential (it’s even taken down out of season) means it impinges little on the natural habitat leaving animals to wander through undisturbed.
This is a place that shuts out the modern world, a place to spend nights round a campfire and eat under the stars. There are just eight private tents, a lounge tent complete with a small library of reference books and a place for communal dining. Lions, leopards and cheetahs abound and between July and October massive numbers of wildebeest and zebra migrate across the plains from the Serengeti. Zoom around in a 4x4 or get up close and personal on a walking safari.

Joy´s Camp - Shaba Game Reserve
Only two properties can be found in northern Kenya’s rugged Shaba Game Reserve and Joy’s Camp is one of them. Located on the site where Joy Adamson wrote Queen of Shaba, this camp is a true wilderness experience. A secluded idyll, it consists of just 10 luxury Somali-style tents, uniquely decorated using handmade glass and fabric from local nomadic tribes. Each has a private deck overlooking the camp’s natural spring, also the area’s main watering hole. Here, elephant and lion jostle for water with rare desert oryx, buffalo, giraffe and zebra. The guided bush walks (and breakfasts) come highly recommended and there’s the bonus of a swimming pool.

Kiwayu - Dodori National Reserve
Set in the remote Dodori National Reserve, 35 miles north of Lamu, Kiwayu is all about rustic luxury. A true beach wilderness, this charming resort hides in dunes overlooking the Indian Ocean and Kiwayu Island. One of Kenya’s best-kept secrets, this deeply unpretentious haven consists of just 18 spacious bandas (local-style cottages). All have been imaginatively designed using palm thatch and woven flooring in order to blend with the surrounding sand. Inside, Swahili touches and splashes of colour add to the cottages’ authenticity. Massive bedrooms open out onto hammock-strewn verandas with glorious views over the bay.
This stretch of wild, uninhabited coastline is ideal for water sports. Guests can spend magical days snorkelling the coral reefs, deep sea and creek fishing, taking island excursions by dhow and dolphin spotting. Kiwayu is a place to restore your mind, body and soul. An informal bar is a favourite hangout and the excellent restaurant serves the best fresh seafood. An instant hit with all who visit.
